Royal Palisade’s Guide to Hypertension – “The Silent Killer”
- Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure
- Hypertension is determined usually with several blood pressure checks over the course of a few weeks — doctors don’t normally determine you have hypertension with just one or two readings
- Hypertension is a blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher
- Factors that can affect hypertension are: Emotional state, physical activity, age, family history, gender (more common in men), race, weight, diet, medication
- Factors you can change to reduce blood pressure are: Diet, weight, activity level, emotional state and medications
- Hypertension is the “Silent Killer” because there are usually no symptoms experienced or symptoms don’t appear immediately
- Eventually you may experience symptoms such as dizziness, headache, uncommon nose bleeds, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath and chest pain
- Having long term, uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart attacks, stroke, kidney failure, eye damage and leg pain when walking
